What do you all think about the projection known as Perter's map, whereby he has mapped the world onto a flat grid of longitudes/lattitudes:

It seems an interesting perspective and as - if not more - accurate than projections usually seen on world maps! Interesting ramifications and pondering when compared to the control of the Developed nations over the others..

Re: Peter's Map
Fri, April 30, 2004 - 1:04 PMIt was an episode where they let oddball groups in to make their case on some wacky pet project. UFO nuts, a highway for wolves, & a group that wanted to redraw all the maps. I think the map they wanted to use instead was the Peters projection.
The Big Block of Cheese thing is some historical reference they used as a literary device to frame the episode. Here's far more than you ever wanted to know about it all: westwing.bewarne.com/second/...ody.html

No slur was intended against users, supporters or admirers of the Peters projection map. My apologies if any were offended.

Re: Peter's Map
Fri, April 30, 2004 - 6:16 PMThere is a lot of controversy over this projection as you can imagine. There is also debate over the real origin (Q: Is Peter's projection original?)of this projection. It is true that NGOs and etc. prefer the map because distortion of the peripheral regions is minimal. I still prefer Robinson's project though and the new winkel-tripel. perhaps we should start centering them over the pacific from now on while we are at it? -

Re: Peter's Map
Sat, May 1, 2004 - 8:13 PMI concede that the best of the orthodox projections seems to be the Winkel-Tripel. Thatnks for the info. However, the Peter's projection makes more sense for future use - because of its being orthogonal (easier manipulation) and distances/space accuracy. Looking at the two and from my experieces in travel, I can understand why NGOs tend to prefer the Peters. Hope itll gain more popluarity and come into usage as an alternate map for certain situations. Its important that people realsie that any map has its radeoffs and depending on what they are seeking, they should follow the respective projections. -

Re: Peter's Map
Mon, May 3, 2004 - 6:10 AMIf you really like Peter's map then you should read the first chapter in Mark Monmonier's book, Drawing the Line, which compares the projection to others (mainly Mercator) but also talks about it's controversial history and potential uses.
